No D/C without HIV: Need to Order HIV and/or HBV STAT if Not in Chart on OB Admission

If there is no HIV and/or HBV lab result in a patient's chart upon OB admission, these labs need to be ordered STAT so they are available for pediatricians in immediate post-partum period.

Our pediatricians won't discharge baby until these have resulted, as they have significant implications for their care. If parent declines, we test the baby.

Order Up: How to Complete Bakri Removal Order

When you are placing an order to have a Bakri balloon removed by nursing, the number of occurances should equal the instilled volume divided by the number of CCs you want withdrawn at a time.

For example: If you originally instilled 500cc and want the nurses to withdraw 100cc every hour, you would write for 5 occurances.

Throwback Thursday: Don't Quit the Pit

Post-Partum Pitocin is included in the OB Labor order set. Once a patient has delivered, please DO NOT discontinue this Post-Partum Pit along with the other orders.

While it makes good logical sense to discontinue labor orders and order post-partum orders after delivery, the pumps we use to give medications require consistency. If you discontinue the post-partum pit before it is finished, the nurse has to stop giving the pitocin, discard the leftover, and then re-start a new bag. What a waste!

OK KOH: KOH and Nitrazine Back in Triage

Nitrazine and KOH testing are returning to OB Triage. This is good news, but with great pH paper comes great responsibility. In the near future, we will be initiating quality control testing at Situational Awareness at the beginning of each 2 week OB block.

SMH POC has MyPath courses for providers to complete to fulfill our competency requirements for PPM testing.
