Going Over Like a Med Balloon: Postpartum (Bakri) Balloon Removal Order
There is a new order available for OB Providers and OB nurses that can be used for indicating sequence to Postpartum Balloon removal.
Miso Scoop: Misoprostol Orders Now Same at HH and SMH
Thanks to the hardwork of our Clinical Councils at Highland and Strong, the Misoprostol orders and dosing at the two institutions are now the same. This move is evidence-based and will benefit our learners, as they will see the same orders given, regardless of hospital.
New dosage:
Misoprostol 50 micrograms every 4 hours

Pixys Sticks: PPH Hemorrhage Kits Now Tracked and Stored in Pixys
Our homemade PPH kits were so popular that other units started asking for them! Given their popularity, pharmacy has asked us to move the kits into the Pixys machines, where they can be properly counted, re-stocked, and tracked.
If you need a PPH kit, nurses are able to get them from the Pixys machine. Using this method, nurses can avoid retrieving each individual PPH-relevant medication from the Pixys machine.
Attendance Mandatory: Attendings Must See Every Patient in OB Triage, Including NSTs
In accordance with the recent change to count our OB triage as an ED, all patients must be seen by an attending. This includes patients who are just in OB triage for a NST. For this reason, it is good practice to think twice before sending a patient to OB triage for a non-urgent NST.
Long Hair, Don't Care: Personal Surgical Cloth Caps Come Back August 10th
The SMH clinical council recently approved an amendment to policy 8.21 (Attire required for invasive sterile procedures).
As a result of this amendment, personal cloth surgical caps/bouffants may be worn during sterile procedures.
Though we have been piloting this on a small-scale over the past month, The policy change does not go into effect until August 10th.
Caps must be removed and laundered after each day that they are used or if they become visibly soiled
Caps must be laundered through hospital-provided laundry service (i.e. they may not be washed at home)
Turnaround time for caps can take up to one week, so you may want to purchase several caps
Drop off and pick-up of caps will be in the “mask store” near the main OR desk in the basement (B-2358)
Write your name on the laundry bag with permanent marker
Obtain a numbered medallion from mask store staff and place into the bag
At drop off:
Place your laundry bag into the green bin outside the mask store
Write your name and tag number in the log book outside the mask store
You will be emailed when your caps are returned
You may pick them up at the mask store
Get SMArt: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Carrier Screening
ACOG endorsed routine screening for SMA a couple of years ago
Most insurances have finally agreed to cover it, which makes it much more feasible to offer to all patients.
Prior to the current pandemic, Reproductive Genetics had initiated the process through the URMC Lab of condensing SMA and CF carrier screening into a single requisition - this has been postponed.

SMA has been added to the New OB smartset checklist, with a link to the correct order in Epic, as well as a patient information handout.
For those of you who do not use the smartset, you can find the correct order there and favorite it for future reference or inclusion in your personalized order sets.

P.S - DSS: Remember to Sign the DSS Day of Surgery Form
If you do a BTL or hysterectomy, please remember to sign the DSS “day of” portion and scan into Haiku.
Steps:
Print form from media. (for c/s, most of the time the nurses do this and it is in the chart)
Confirm the patient still wants it, and sign “day of” section
Scan form back into media using Haiku, labeled as “DSS day of surgery signed consent” (If you don’t know how to do this, please ask).
There has been a rash of forms not being completed or lost, and this prevents the entire global from being submitted. If we don’t submit before filing dates, we lose the entire global.
If Mollie’s team is missing the form, she will reach out the divisional AA’s to have them contact you and let them know that these are missing. You can then print/sign/scan to get it back to them.
